Email Marketing – How to Start Building Your Email List Today

by | Jul 19, 2019

Why create an email marketing list?

According to the Direct Marketing Association, US businesses see an average return on investment of 4300% from email marketing.

While there are many ways to share your content, email is one of the most powerful, if done properly. Generating a solid email list is essential for the success of your online business.

Do you have an active and effective email campaign strategy working for you right now? Are you growing your list or have you started to build one?

A few tips…

Start Right Away

Avoid the mistake of waiting to start an email list. It’s such a valuable tool for your business. Start right away. Start building your list now.

Even small lists can provide value. Imagine if you had 100 people in a room to listen to you speak. An email is a personal connection.

“A small list that wants exactly what you’re offering is better than a bigger list that isn’t committed.”

Ramsay Leimenstoll

In this post we have some key takeaways for you to grow an email list for the betterment of your online enterprise.

Let’s look at some of the advantages of email marketing.

Advantages

1. It’s low cost

2. It’s direct – you can reach out directly to people who have shown an interest in something you have to offer

3. It’s reliable – you can build a reliable way to connect with folks interested in your business

4. It’s one of the best ways to build a relationship with potential customers

5. Email is checked regularly

6. It has a high ROI

7. You can provide personalized content

“Personalization – it is not about first/last name. It’s about relevant content.”  Dan Jak

“Email has an ability many channels don’t: creating valuable, personal touches – at scale.”  David Newman

And…

Email is an Excellent Way to Provide Value to Your Readers

Building an email list is like running a bakery.

Usually there is something enticing that brings a customer in for the first time like the smell of fresh baked bread or cookies in the window. This is like the offer you put out there to get people to sign up.

Once they sample your goods (opt in for your newsletter), you have the opportunity to turn them into regular customers.

When you send out an email, it’s like giving them a treat. So, the goal is to bring value to your readers.

Identify their problems. Bring them the perfect solution.

Having an email list is beneficial for all business models.

What Do You Need to Start an Email List?

1. A website or blog

2. An email marketing platform

3. A high-quality opt-in form

All of these are easy to set up and require no coding skills. The most you’ll have to do is copy and paste a small piece of code assigned to you and your site.

You can read our post on how to start a blog here.

You can read our Divi WordPress Theme Review here (it includes the high-quality Bloom email opt-in)

Also, if you’re using a quality e-commerce platform like Shopify, they have a built in blog function, you just need to install an email marketing app and connect it to your chosen email marketing platform (two excellent options below).

Once you have a website or blog, getting started with an email platform is essential, quick, and easy.

How to Start

There are many email marketing platforms to choose from. When I started with my first email platform I went with MailChimp. They have a free starter plan and I was unsure about the process and didn’t want to spend money making mistakes.

Turned out, MailChimp was a mistake. The problem with MailChimp is that they want to control the content you communicate to your readers. They don’t include this in the promo materials, but they have a list two pages long of what they do and don’t allow.

Long story short. If their bots don’t like your content for any reason, your account gets frozen.

I believe the content I share is between me and my readers. I publish the content I choose. My readers, with every email, have the option to unsubscribe. So I went looking for a better solution.

I found two.

Sendinblue and ConvertKit.

How to Choose the Best Email Marketing Platform for You

Sendinblue has a free starter plan. ConvertKit starts at $29 per month.

If you are brand new to blogging, creating content, and would be starting your first email list I would recommend Sendinblue’s free plan.

If you have a blog or have regularly posted content and plan to begin emailing your new content out right away I recommend ConvertKit.

Sendinblue is perfect for getting started. They have an excellent service. While most email marketing platforms charge by the number of subscribers you have, SB charges by how many emails you send out.

ConvertKit becomes more cost effective when you start to send out emails regularly. They also have excellent tools for all phases of your email campaigns and great automation tools. So, if you are at the point where you want the a leading platform for regular outreach. This is an excellent choice.

Get started with one of these two email platforms now and harness the power of emails for your business.
